Large U.S. Order for Taser
By BLOOMBERG NEWS
Published: June 14, 2005
Taser International, the maker of electric stun guns, has received a $1.4 million order from the General Services Administration for an unspecified number of the weapons for use by the military.
The order, for the X26 model and related equipment, will be shipped this quarter, Taser said yesterday in a statement. It is the company's biggest order this year.
The purchase comes as Taser's sales have been hurt by safety concerns as use of the guns climbs. Taser says its weapons are safe alternatives to the use of deadly force.
The safety debate and an inquiry by the Securities and Exchange Commission into Taser's claims, has hurt sales, which in the first quarter fell 22 percent to $10.2 million. Taser, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., rose 38 cents a share yesterday, or 3.5 percent, to close at $11.22.
