Health workers at odds

http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060627/NEWS/606270385

After the storm, the Health Department was given access to the federal Strategic National Stockpile of pharmaceuticals, but Delahousey said he could not find out what was available. Instead he was told to submit a list of needs, but those requests just went into a "black hole," he said.

"I would never hear back whether I would get it," he said. "I just couldn't find out what they had."

In addition, much of the millions of dollars of donated medical supplies that poured into the Coast was misdirected.

"They would stop at some checkpoint and would be directed to volunteer clinics, and we didn't know where they were," Delahousey said.

NORTH KOREA: HERE'S OUR REAL   TARGETS!

Big missle threat from N. Korea is in the news this week.
Is it that they are SO-O-o bad ... or is it that our military contractors have lied since the Reagan era about their magical intercontinental missle defence system???

Maybe contractors raking in billions never really   thought their wares would be put to the test.
If that's the case - we're screwed!

Here are a FEW ITEMS to consider:

The rigged missile defense test
July 31, 2001 - The Pentagon and the Bush administration are determined to sell the American people a national missile defense system that will probably increase tensions with allies and adversaries and will surely cost more than $100 billion. Their latest marketing exercise took place on the evening of July 14, when a "kill vehicle" launched from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific smashed into a rocket sent up from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Precisely according to plan, the target was instantly vaporized on impact -- and along with it, or so the Pentagon's uniformed salesmen hoped, the perennial concern that missile defense won't work. With the cooperation of major news organizations and conservative pundits, that test provided an enormous propaganda boost to the Bush proposal, which conveniently enough had been brought up to Capitol Hill by Defense Department officials just two days earlier.

There was only one thing that all the happy salesmen forgot to mention about their latest test drive. The rocket fired from Vandenberg was carrying a global positioning satellite beacon that guided the kill vehicle toward it. In other words, it would be fair to say that the $100 million test was rigged.

US missle defence test dodges decoys

(A)n expert contacted by New Scientist questioned the validity of recent tests. Ted Postol, a physicist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an ex-military scientist, says all the latest tests have involved only easy-to-spot decoys.

He says that after the first two tests revealed an inability to identify more advanced decoys reliably, they were replaced to prevent failure. "They're completely rigged, quite frankly," he says.

U.S. Missile Defense Test Fails

Missile Defense: Growing Concerns and Costs

Missile defense tests conducted thus far have not demonstrated that the system would work under real world conditions and scenarios. Not all the tests have intercepted the target and none have used sophisticated countermeasures sure to be part of a real missile attack. There are also reports that some of the tests have been rigged and their successes exaggerated. One report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, and another by the GAO, show the testing regime for missile defense is at best suspect.3

Holes in the Missile Shield

...despite the more than $80 billion spent by the U.S. on missile defense since 1985, this system will not provide significant protection for many years, if ever. The political pressure to claim that the U.S. is secure against a rogue nation's attack has led to a defense that will not counter even the earliest threats from the emerging missile powers.

Mrs. Betty Bowers reviews Miss Ann Coulter (oh, and her new book, too)

This week, sweet Ann Coulter released her latest in a series of pre-rehab books, entitled Godless. Naturally, the title led me to believe that it was an unexpectedly candid autobiography. Alas, she may be saving that book until after she's been strapped to a bed at Hazelden for a month. Instead of using this book to dabble in the bracing novelty of introspection, Miss Coulter turns her two-setting mind ("off" and "off her rocker") to hector us about religion.

Let's be honest: Reading a book about religion from Ann Coulter is tantamount to reading a book about dieting from Michael Moore. After all, who wants to be lectured about not being Christian enough by an almost-50 year-old boozehound in a black leather miniskirt who has never been married? Count me as having a healthy skepticism over whether Miss Coulter has saved herself for marriage. Or anything, for that matter. (more)

NAT'L LAWYERS GUILD CONDEMNS FBI'S OPERATION BACKFIRE AS UNCONSTITUTIONAL

The National Lawyers Guild condemns the FBI's Operation Backfire "green scare" tactics as an unconstitutional abuse of authority. The FBI has engaged in an orchestrated campaign of issuing subpoenas to environmental activists, conducting large scale roundups of activists, levying unprecedented penalties for property crimes, and using threats of severe sanctions to leverage fear of conviction and force individuals to turn state's evidence. USA out-flanked in Eurasia Energy Politics?

... In recent months, however, this strategy of global energy dominance, a strategic US priority, has shown signs of producing just the opposite: a kind of 'coalition of the unwilling,’ states who increasingly see no other prospect, despite traditional animosities, but to cooperate to oppose what they see as a US push to control it all, their energy future security.

Some in Washington are beginning to realize they might have been too clever by about half, as is evident in recent public statements to both China and Russia, two nations whose cooperation in some form is essential to the success of the global US energy project. (more)

In all the Australian media coverage of the Howard government’s latest armed intervention in East Timor, the words "oil" and "gas" are hardly mentioned. Yet control over the vast reserves beneath the Timor Sea—now valued at more than $30 billion due to rising world oil and natural gas prices—lies at the heart of the dispatch of troops and police.

Senate Emphasis on Ideology Has Some in G.O.P. Anxious

[ New York Times ]
WASHINGTON, June 6 — Though some Republican candidates may relish the Senate's current concentration on same-sex marriage and other ideologically charged topics, Senator Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island is not among them.

"It may stir up my primary voters a little bit against me," said Mr. Chafee, a centrist Republican up for re-election. He opposes the push for a constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage and is under intense pressure to back a proposed amendment that would forbid flag burning. "I'm collateral damage."

Other Republicans, including some conservatives, say Mr. Chafee may not be the only potential victim of what they see as a misguided effort to appeal to social conservatives by staging votes intended primarily to make a point about the party's values(!!!!)... (more)

Video: Coulter says 9/11 widows 'self-obsessed' 'millionaires'
'reveling in their status as celebrities'

RAW STORY -- Published: Tuesday June 6, 2006

Ann Coulter entered a "testy" exchange with Today show host Matt
Lauer when Lauer confronted the conservative columnist on
passages from her book denouncing 9/11 widows as "self-obsessed"
"millionaires" "reveling in their status as celebrities" [and
the deaths of their husbands, she writes. -KFH]

If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.

Mastectomy Bill in Congress

It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important...please take the time and do it!

Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill - Important legislation for all women.

There's a bill before Congress now called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctors, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.

PLEASE Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below. You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

Thank you -- Please pass on!
